Vodka has a category problem. Most of it is grain-neutral by design, a blank slate engineered for mixers. Altamura Vodka is built on the opposite premise: that a great vodka should carry the terroir of its grain into the bottle. It's now available in Florida through Costa Spirits.

A PDO grain, in a vodka bottle

Altamura is the world's first vodka distilled entirely from PDO-certified Altamura wheat: an ancient durum variety grown by the Cappiello family in the same Puglian terroir for generations. PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) is European geographical-protection law: it's the same designation that defines Champagne, Parmigiano Reggiano, and Pane di Altamura, the only bread in the world with a PDO. The wheat is so distinctive that the EU regulates its production zone, milling process, and yield per hectare.

What it tastes like

Triple-distilled, five-times filtered through activated carbon, bottled at 43% ABV (slightly above the 40% standard, which gives the wheat room to express), no additives. The texture is fuller than a typical vodka, slightly chewy, with bread-crust and toasted-grain notes carrying through the finish. It's a vodka that doesn't disappear in a martini.

Altamura is already on the back bars of some of the world's most respected programs: Paradiso (Barcelona): a multi-year top-ranked World's 50 Best Bars listee; Maybe Sammy (Sydney); and the Four Seasons Surf Club Miami, where Floridians can order it on premises. Every licensed FL trade buyer can carry it.
